RPKI and IRR Help Reduce Route Hijacks
According to a study conducted by LACNIC's Technology department (https://www.labs.lacnic.net/panoramica_sobre_secuestros_de_redes_ip/), the growing use of the Resource Certification System (RPKI) across the region, the development of the Internet Routing Registry (LACNIC IRR) and the implementation of the FORT Validator have all contributed to the reduction of route hijacks in Latin America and the Caribbean.
By offering these and other tools to its member organizations, LACNIC is playing a major role in reducing the number of IP address hijacks in the region.
In this sense, in addition to its RPKI service, LACNIC has also launched the FORT Validator, a tool developed in collaboration with NIC.mx. Just as the RPKI system, the FORT Validator validates route origin by means of digitally signed objects, thus preventing third parties from falsifying information and diverting traffic to their own sites for malicious purposes.
To help improve the routing system, LACNIC has also created its Internet Routing Registry, a database that allows an operator to express its routing policy and make it publicly available so that other actors can use it to configure their equipment (https://lacnic.zendesk.com/hc/es/categories/360002625214-Internet-Routing-Registry).
These services complement the training on routing security offered at LACNIC's annual events and the courses provided through the LACNIC Campus.
We invite our members to use all the tools at their disposal to reduce the risk of route hijacking events in the region.
