Call for Candidates to Host Copies of the I Root Server

Call for Candidates to Host Copies of the I Root Server

As part of its +Raices program, LACNIC is calling for Latin American and Caribbean organizations interested in hosting copies of the I Root Server managed by Netnod.

The main goal of +Raíces is the installation of anycast root server copies in the countries of the LACNIC region. Installing these servers at strategic locations such as IXPs (Internet Exchange Points) and NAPs (Network Access Points) throughout the region seeks to achieve greater resiliency for one of the Internet's most critical resources, the DNS. It provides redundancy and reduces criticality, allowing for a better response in case of potential DDoS attacks or eventual infrastructure failures that render certain root servers inoperative.

LACNIC's role is to coordinate with potential host organizations and those providing the root servers, in this case Netnod, as well as to promote these new root servers. In certain cases, LACNIC may sponsor the installation of a root server copy.

Requirements

A rack unit (1U) for mounting a Supermicro PR-6018R-WRF server with a IPMI 2.0 interface for remote management.

http://www.supermicro.com/products/system/1U/6018/SYS-6018R-WTR.cfm

The server requires three network interfaces:

  • IPMI interface
  • Gigabit Ethernet interface for system management
  • Gigabit Ethernet interface for production

IP addressing:

The organization must provide:

  • One public IPv4 address for the IPMI interface
  • One public IPv4 address for the management interface
  • One public /28 IPv4 prefix and preferably a /64 IPv6 prefix routed through the management interface
  • One IPv4 address (which may be private) for the operational interface to connect with the neighbor BGP

The organization will be responsible for the costs deriving from hosting the server, as well as for the bandwidth needed to operate the root server copy.

How to participate

If you'd like to host an anycast root server copy, please complete the form available at: http://www.lacnic.net/web/lacnic/raices-form

In order to better process your request, we recommend providing a brief description of your organization and the type of connectivity available.
