New Services Added in 2020
This year, LACNIC added new services and advanced in the development of additional benefits for its members.
One of the first additions was the Computer Security Incident Response Center (LACNIC CSIRT ) established in response to the technical community's growing demand. The creation of this center built on the maturity reached by the services provided up to that point by LACNIC WARP. At the same time, LACNIC launched its Internet Routing Registry (IRR), a database that allows operators in the region to share their routing policies and collaborate with the Internet routing system so that others can use this public routing information.
This year LACNIC also started publishing data obtained through the FORT Monitor initiative, a real-time map of routing incidents in Latin America and the Caribbean. Fort Monitor a project led by LACNIC and NIC Mexico designed for technical experts, decision-makers and activists in the LAC region.
With a new, more technical approach, this year the Regional Fund for the Strengthening of the Internet in Latin America and the Caribbean (FRIDA ) supported 17 projects selected as the winners of its annual call for proposals. In 2020, the FRIDA focused on technical initiatives in line with LACNIC's mission.
In turn, new course offerings were added to the LACNIC CAMPUS , LACNIC's e-learning platform, for the purpose of strengthening distance education during the pandemic. The new courses include Internet Governance, IPv6 in Last-Mile Networks, and a new version of the Advanced IPv6 course.
In the month of August, the policy that allows IPv4 transfers outside the region without the need for a merger or acquisition among the companies involved came into operation.
LACNIC's IT Women project launched a mentoring program to strengthen the professional development of the women who are part of the region's technical community. Six women were selected to participate in this first edition of the program, with which LACNIC hopes to bring a new generation of women to its participation spaces and encourage them to produce knowledge.
Based on the interests expressed by its members, the LACNIC staff is already working on new initiatives that will be presented next year.
