LACNIC Joins LAC-IX as a Member

2 December 2020

The Internet Address Registry for Latin America and the Caribbean (LACNIC) announces that it is now a member of the Latin American and Caribbean Association of Internet Exchange Point Operators (LAC-IX), an alliance that will allow further strengthening Internet exchange points in the region.

LACNIC and LAC-IX had already been working together with the Internet Society for years to promote and support new IXPs across the region. In fact, during LACNIC 29, the three organizations signed a cooperation agreement to work jointly and in a coordinated manner on activities to promote the development of Internet exchange points in Latin America and the Caribbean and their adoption of best practices.

As part of this agreement, LACNIC has provided support for the creation of new IXPs by jointly organizing training courses, technical workshops and other tools seeking to provide training and share knowledge.

“We joined LAC-IX as a member to strengthen our relationship,” said Guillermo Cicileo, Head of Internet Infrastructure Research and Development at LACNIC.

Meanwhile, Ariel Graizer, President of LAC-IX, noted that “we are proud that an organization of LACNIC's relevance is joining our community. This motivates us to continue working together to strengthen IXPs as part of the region's critical Internet infrastructure.”

This new step by LACNIC to strengthen its alliance with IXPs will allow the organization to be in closer contact with their technical experts, to participate internally in LAC-IX meetings, to better understand IXPs’ needs, and to collaborate in the deployment of services to continue to improve Internet infrastructure in the region.

This year, LACNIC organized training activities for IX.DO in the Dominican Republic,IXP.GT in Guatemala, and IXSY Yucatán in Mexico. In each case, four training activities were offered — BGP for IXPs, RPKI for IXPs, IPv6 for IXPs, and DNS/DNSSEC for IXPs —presented by Carlos Martínez, Alejandro Acosta and Guillermo Cicileo.
