Agreement to Strengthen the Internet Routing System

Lacnic, Cisco Systems, AEPROVI and Andean Trade are working together on a project aimed at ensuring the routing system and the right to use IPv4 and IPv6 addresses

Medellin, Colombia, 9 May 2013 - The Internet Address Registry for Latin America and the Caribbean (LACNIC), Cisco, the Association of Internet Service Providers, Carriers and Information Technology Companies of Ecuador (Aeprovi), and Andean Trade announced today a joint project to help strengthen Internet routing system technology and security.

Through this project, announced during the Lacnic 19 event currently being held in Medellin, Colombia, these organizations will seek to generate relevant results and information to ensure the Internet routing system's chain of trust, starting in Ecuador, more specifically at NAP Ecuador (the Internet exchange point managed by AEPROVI).

This project is part of the global program LACNIC is executing throughout the region in order to establish an Internet resource certification system that will allow all members of an organization to digitally prove they have the right to use IPv4 and IPv6 addresses.

LACNIC's Executive Director, Raul Echeberría, stressed that they are all "striving for a noticeable improvement to the Internet routing system's reliability and security." He added that every step is an important link "in the chain of trust that seeks to certify that certain resource belongs to a specific organization. Any organization using this chain of trust can verify the right to use a resource and identify malicious users trying to hijack resources or protect themselves against configuration errors."

Roque Gagliano, Technical Leader at Cisco, said that "improving inter-domain routing system security necessarily requires the participation of multiple entities and this project is a pioneering show of collaboration. We are very happy to be able to provide our routing and security technologies to Internet exchange points and hope that the project's findings will be a step forward towards improving Internet security in the region and throughout the world."

Lacnic is a non-government, non-profit organization that manages IP address space and other related resources in benefit of the Latin American and Caribbean Internet community, provides IP address registration services, and represents and advocates for the region's views and interests in defense of the Internet.
