Tips for Effective Presentations
Plan
- Set yourself a goal before putting together the presentation. What messages do you want to transmit? Remember that the audience will not remember more than two or three key takeaways.
- Learn about your audience and their expectations. What will they be looking for? Does your presentation offer any value or benefit to the audience?
Structure of your presentation
- Begin with a brief introduction
- Create an emotional bond to involve the audience: tell a story, offer a shocking fact (figures, etc.), use humor, ask a question
- Provide your key message
- Justify and legitimize your messages (reasons and benefits)
- Close the introduction and reconnect with the audience (story, image, etc.)
Content
- Keep your presentation short by including the key information: too much information can cause rejection or a lack of interest.
- Check that the number of slides you are using is in line with the time you have been allocated.
- Pay attention to your content: check that the content of your slides is relevant and displays properly on screen
- Don't assume that the audience is an expert on the topic you are presenting. Try to bring down to earth the more technical concepts.
- If you use acronyms, explain them. Otherwise, avoid using acronyms.
- Plan any examples you will use. Don't improvise.
Rehearse
- Rehearse your presentation out loud and keep in mind your body language (posture, gestures, eye contact)
- Plan the clothes you will be wearing during the presentation
- Control your timing and how quickly you speak (remember that simultaneous interpretation and streaming services will be available for the event)
- See if there is any information that does not add value. In this case, it's best to eliminate it from the presentation.
You're ready!
- Keep calm: take a deep breath and remember you are ready
- Remember that communication involves many aspects: watch what you wear, keep in mind your gestures, posture and body language in general (they reinforce your message)
- Maintain eye contact with your audience
- Your tone of voice should not be monotonous and should be appropriate for your discourse
- Be brief and clear
Remember that all presentation videos will be available on the event's website. We recommend watching your presentation and noting any aspects where you see room for improvement.
