Description:

Traditionally, the "digital divide" has been defined as a gap between those who have Internet access and those who do not. Internet connectivity is growing worldwide, and many participants have expressed the hope that it will become a force for empowering and reducing the inequality among social groups and countries. In the future, however, the ability to participate in a meaningful way and to benefit from the Internet will probably be determined by more than the ability to connect. In this scenario, the future of the Internet poses different questions and challenges:
  • If we are able to achieve a world where everyone has Internet access, will every segment of society have equal opportunities for meaningful participation and benefiting from the Internet?
  • In the future, will countries with advanced Internet technology, infrastructure and innovation accelerate their leadership, or will developing regions be able to close the gap?
  • Will different connection technologies, Internet quality and level of openness result in fundamentally different experiences and opportunity levels for different users?
