Welcome to the first day daily recap of our activities at LACNIC 20 – LACNOG 2013 "Committed to the future of the Internet" in Willemstad, Curaçao! (foto staff)

This Monday, October 28th 2013, almost 250 people came on the first day of registration at the World Trade Center Curaçao to pick up the materials and participate in the six proposed parallel tutorials. We thank the participants from more than 20 countries in the region, who have joined us in Curaçao, the island known as the Caribbean trade center.

We invite you to read these daily updates on the activities during LACNIC 20- LACNOG 2013, available at the event website (eventos.lacnic.net/lacnic20) and printed at the registration desk in spanish, english and portuguese.

This time, the Forum of Incident Response Teams (FIRST) was also being held alongside the six technical tutorials (IPv6 Monitoring, BGP Routing and RPKI, DNSSEC, Internet Resource Management, IPv6 in Mobile and Fixed Access Networks, and the IETF Session).

FIRST (Forum of Incident Response Teams)

This first FIRST Technical Colloquia & Symposia, opened to both FIRST members and invited guests, was held from 9:00-18:00 and its aim was to share information about vulnerabilities, incidents, tools and all other issues that affect the operation of incident response and security teams.

These six technical tutorials, presented today at 9.00 hours (Curaçao local time- UTC -4:00 hours) with participation of over 200 people were;

IPv6 Monitoring Tutorial

Instructors:  Santiago Aggio (CCTBB CONICET) and Arturo Servín (LACNIC)

This tutorial has presented different ways of monitoring both dual stack IPv6-IPv4 networks and IPv6-only networks. Protocols such as SNMP, Netflow, and others have been analyzed, as well as other tools that can be useful for monitoring traffic, applications and services over IPv6.

BGP Routing and RPKI Tutorial

This tutorial, presented by Alvaro Retana (Cisco Systems), Carlos Martínez-Cagnazzo (LACNIC), Hans Reyes (CUDI) and Nicolás Antoniello , was been divided in two parts; the first session  the basics of the BGP protocol as well as basic operational aspects in carrier environments were presented. The second session, some of the new trends in routing security, specifically origin validation using resource certification (RPKI),  were introduced.

DNSSEC Tutorial

Instructors: Juan Alejo Peirano (LACNIC),  Joao Damas (Dyn)

Students were introduced to the basics of DNSSEC and performed practical practical activities that allowed them to become familiar with the operational aspects of this technology.

Internet Resource Management

Instructor: Elisa Peirano (LACNIC)

In this tutorial participants have learnt how to how to use LACNIC's Resource Management System, use the WHOIS service and properly configure reverse DNS delegations.

IPv6 in Mobile and fixed Access Networks

Instructors: Tomás Lynch –Ericsson, Rodrigo Regis- NIC.br

This tutorial presented the different technologies and techniques used by last-mile access providers (both fixed and mobile) to deploy IPv6.

  1. IETF Session

Speaker: Alvaro Retana- Cisco System

During this tutorial there was described many aspects of the IETF, with the goal of explaining to newcomers how the IETF works.

The day concluded in the Exhibition Hall room, with a session in which Ernesto Majó (LACNIC) and Ricardo Patara (LACNOG) welcomed and explained the dynamics of LACNIC- LACNOG events to more than 70 new registered participants.
