Managing Legacy Resources FAQ

As the Regional Internet Registry for Latin America and the Caribbean, LACNIC is responsible for contributing to the legitimate and proper use of Internet number resources, as well as for maintaining the corresponding registry up to date.

Contact LACNIC at contacto-registro@lacnic.net and identify yourself as an organization that holds or uses legacy resources.

The LACNIC Registration Services team will specify the steps to be followed in each case, which may include requesting documentation required to justify the right to use the resources. Based on this documentation, the team will conduct the corresponding analysis.

A determination will then be made as to whether the right to use the resources is justified.

If a holding organization does not contact LACNIC within the established deadline, or fails to justify the right to use the resources, LACNIC will cease providing registration services to such organizations.

Yes. Organizations that have received legacy resources can also become LACNIC members. To do so, they must first justify their right to use the resources and then sign the service agreement and pay the corresponding fee.

Yes. Legacy IPv4 resources can be transferred, provided the transaction is supported by legal documentation that proves the change of holder.

Once the transfer is approved, these resources will no longer be considered legacy and will be subject to the policies currently in force. This means that the receiving organization assumes all rights and obligations, including membership where applicable and the obligation to pay current renewal fees for the registered resources.

Because we are in Phase 3 of IPv4 Exhaustion, additional IPv4 resources will not be assigned or allocated to organizations that have already been assigned or allocated IPv4 resources either by LACNIC or by the organizations that preceded LACNIC.

During this phase, IPv4 space may only be assigned to organizations that have not received any prior assignments.
