Call for Interested Parties to Host DNS Root Server Copies
As part of its +Raices program, LACNIC is calling organizations in the region of Latin America and the Caribbean interested in hosting copies of DNS root servers to submit their proposals.
The main goal of the +Raices project is to install anycast root server copies in countries of the LACNIC region. Installing these servers at strategic locations around the region such as IXPs (Internet Exchange Points) and NAPs (Network Access Points) increases the resilience of access to one of the Internet's most critical resources, namely the DNS root. In doing so, we achieve redundancy and mitigate the risk posed by a potential failure of these critical resources, thus providing for a better response to possible DDoS attacks or eventual infrastructure failures which might render certain root-servers inoperative.
The role of LACNIC is to coordinate with potential host organizations and root server providers, as well as to promote the installation of the new root server copies. In some cases, LACNIC may sponsor the installation of a server.
Requirements
2U of rack space for hosting a physical server to be specified depending on the service to be provided and 10 Mbps minimum guaranteed bandwidth.
The host organization will bear the costs of hosting the server, as well as the cost of the bandwidth needed to operate the root server copy.
IP addressing – The organization must provide:
- One public IPv4 address and one public IPv6 address for a remote management interface.
- One public IPv4 address and one public IPv6 address for the management interface.
- One IPv4 address and one IPv6 address (the IPv4 address may be a private address) for the management interface to connect to the BGP neighbor
- In some cases, it may be necessary to reserve a global /28 IPv4 block and a /64 IPv6 block.
The organization must have an autonomous system and IP resources assigned by LACNIC. It must also have rich national and international connectivity to publish anycast prefixes. It must be able to establish a BGP session with the server and publish the prefixes it receives to other peers.
