09:00 Hands-On Tutorial: Changing Internet Policies Instructor

Instructor: Gianina Pensky, LACNIC

LACNIC is responsible for assigning and managing Internet number resources (IPv4, IPv6), Autonomous System Numbers, reverse resolution and other resources for the region of Latin America and the Caribbean.
The rules/policies under which LACNIC manages those resources are decided by our regional community.
The workshop has the following goals:

To explain and exchange ideas about the topics currently under discussion in our region

To teach anyone interested in participating in these decisions how to do so

To ensure that anyone interested can effectively participate in this process

The workshop is aimed at all members of the community interested in participating.

Tutorial: Resource Management / Mi LACNIC

Instructors: Rodrigo Zambrana, Sergio Rojas

Last year, LACNIC launched a new resource management system called MiLACNIC, which, in addition to the features currently available (sub-assignments, rDNS delegation, managing users, etc.), centralizes payments and the Resource Certification System (RPKI).

The main goal of this tutorial is for participants to gain an in-depth understanding of MiLACNIC's features and how to use them.

It has been designed for representatives of organizations that are already members of LACNIC and have been assigned IPv4 and/or IPv6 resources directly by LACNIC.

Participants who are technically responsible for a LACNIC member organization can log on to LACNIC's Resource Management System with their corresponding username and password.

No computers will be available in the room for this tutorial, so participants are advised to bring a laptop, tablet, or any other Internet-enabled device.

Important:
Because LACNIC NIRs use a different platform, the material shown during the presentation is not available for members of organizations in Brazil and Mexico.

Tutorial: BGP/RPKI

Instructors: Mariela Rocha, Guillermo Cicileo, Gerardo Rada, Nicolás Antoniello

Description

In the context of the global Internet, BGP operation involves complex aspects that have recently been compounded by certain security events such as route hijacking and route leaks.

This is a two-part tutorial. The first session will present an introduction to the BGP protocol, as well as recommendations and current best practices both for carrier/ISP as well as for end-user organization environments.

The second part will introduce some trends in routing security, specifically origin validation using resource certification (RPKI).

Principles of BGP operation and best practices
    Route hijacking and leaking
    Resource certification (RPKI)
    Creation of ROAs

The tutorial will include hands-on exercises, so we recommend that participants bring their own laptop computers.

Instructors: Nicolás Antoniello, Arturo Servín, Carlos Martínez, Guillermo Cicileo, Job Snijders, Christian O´Flaherty

Description:

This tutorial will analyze the basics of Traffic Exchange, Peering and CDNs and discuss their business relationships as well as relevant technical aspects.

Specific topics to be addressed in this workshop include how, who with, and where to implement peering relationships, what type of traffic exchanges should be used, how to analyze network traffic in order to make better interconnection decisions, where to register peering sites and polices, and best practices for using BGP for peering.

Participants are expected to have a working knowledge of BGP.

Tutorial: IPv6 for Decision Makers

Instructors: Carlos Martínez, Juan Carlos Alonso, LACNIC

This workshop is geared towards decision makers within the ICT sector. The workshop will present the basics of IPv6, its importance for Internet development, and business cases that show that IPv6 is the best solution to the problem of address scarcity from the technical and commercial point of view.

16.30 Workshop: Be Part of the Future of the Internet. Start Using Your IPv6 Prefix.

Coordination: Alejandro Acosta, Ariel Weher

Throughout the LAC region, a large number of IPv6 prefixes have been assigned to different organizations. Many, however, are not being announced to the Internet. The reasons for this are very varied and include design issues as well as planning and business decisions. In many cases, however, this may be due to a lack of guidance or knowledge on how to incorporate this new technology, external factors, or other reasons that may be holding up this decision.

We invite you to participate in a special session to discuss the best way to announce IPv6 prefixes consistent with industry best practices. This session will feature a discussion of the reasons why organizations are not announcing the prefixes they have been assigned, as well as available options and best practices for doing so.

Keep in mind that this is not a tutorial or a workshop. Neither is it our intention to discuss whether or not you should incorporate IPv6 in your network. This session is strongly geared towards those who could already be announcing their IPv6 prefixes but are not doing so, and its purpose is to share the reasons for this and possible solutions to the problem.

Participation requirements: Basic knowledge of the IPv6 protocol, knowledge of BGP, and having received an IPv6 assignment from LACNIC.
