The Internet Hub for Latin America and the Caribbean Opens its Doors

The Internet hub for Latin America and the Caribbean, home to the continent's six most important Internet organizations, opened its doors on Tuesday, April 17.

The Internet Hub hosts the headquarters of the Latin American and Caribbean Internet Addresses Registry (LACNIC), the regional chapter of the Internet Society (ISOC), the Latin American Cooperation of Advanced Networks (CLARA), the Latin American and Caribbean Association of Country Code Top Level Domain Administrators (LacTLD), the Latin American and Caribbean Federation for Internet and Electronic Commerce (eCOM L@C), and the Latin American and Caribbean Internet Exchange Point Operators Association (LAC-IX).

The official opening ceremony of the Internet Hub for Latin America and the Caribbean was attended by the President of Uruguay, José Mujica, and the Minister of Industry, Energy and Mining, Roberto Kreimerman, among other local political personalities, as well as by diplomats and representatives of other international organizations headquartered in Montevideo and abroad.

During the ceremony, Minister Kreimerman noted that technology allows the region to offer added value and underlined the importance of regional integration around this and other issues to promote the growth of Latin America and the Caribbean.

"The Internet Hub was created to help build synergies, support development, and offer more and improved services to our community," said Raúl Echeberría, Executive Director of LACNIC and President of the Internet Society.

Concentrating the six major Internet organizations in one location makes it easier for these organizations to coordinate with each other, strengthens the sector's institutionality and its capacity to contribute to Internet development in Latin America and the Caribbean.
